Every time your order fills in a fraction of a second, someone was ready to take the opposite side. This is the story of who that someone usually is — the market maker — and how the whole machinery of liquidity actually works.

, and within a heartbeat the order is done. You almost never stop to ask the obvious question: for you to have bought, somebody had to sell to you at that exact instant, in that exact size. Who was it?

Most of the time, it was not another retail trader who happened to want the mirror image of your trade at the same millisecond. It was a 

 — a participant whose whole job is to stand in the middle and always be ready to trade. This post explains what they do, how they earn, the risks they carry, and how all of it plays out specifically in Indian markets.

Imagine a market with no one standing in the middle. You want 100 shares right now. For your order to fill, a seller must 

 want to sell exactly 100 shares, at your price, at the same moment. If nobody like that is around, your order just sits there and waits. Minutes. Maybe hours.

: both sides must show up together — same price, same size, same time. It is a coincidence, and coincidences are rare. A market that depends on them is slow and frustrating.

Without someone who is always ready to trade, buyers and sellers spend most of their time waiting around for each other.

Liquidity is how easily you can buy or sell something 

quickly, in the size you want, without moving the price much

. That is the whole definition, and every word in it matters.

In a liquid market — say Reliance or HDFC Bank shares, where lakhs of buyers and sellers are present — you trade instantly, right near the last traded price. In an illiquid market — a thinly traded SME stock, or a far out-of-the-money option that barely trades — you wait, and your own order shoves the price against you as it eats through the few quotes that exist.

Liquidity is how fast you can turn an asset into cash, or cash into an asset, at a fair price. High liquidity = quick and cheap. Low liquidity = slow and expensive.

A market maker is a participant who continuously posts 

They commit to both sides at the same time. So whenever you arrive — buyer or seller, morning or afternoon — there is already a counterparty waiting. You never have to hunt for a matching human. You simply trade against the market maker's standing quote.

A market maker is like a shop that is always open, always showing you a price it will buy from you at and a price it will sell to you at.

Here is the key detail: the ask is always a little 

 than the bid. The gap between them is the 

Order book — stock quoted around ₹500

The best bid is ₹499.90 and the best ask is ₹500.10, so the spread is ₹0.20. That spread is the market maker's pay for the service of being permanently available.

You have already met this idea in real life. The currency counter at the airport buys your dollars cheap and sells them dear; the gap is their margin. A market maker does the same thing for shares, options and futures — thousands of times a day.

The spread is the small toll you pay for the convenience of trading instantly. That toll is the market maker's reward for always being there.

The market maker bought 100 and sold 100 — flat, no position left over — and pocketed 

. It never had to guess whether the price would rise or fall.

Twenty rupees sounds like nothing. But run that round-trip a few thousand times across the day, across hundreds of stocks, and the tiny edges stack into a real business. This is the heart of market making: 

earn the spread again and again while staying neutral on direction.

If a market maker can keep buying at its bid and selling at its ask, it earns the spread over and over — without betting on which way the price goes.

Inventory risk: when the trades don't balance

Real life is messier than Example 1. The market maker does not always get a tidy buy-then-sell. Sometimes 

, and it keeps buying, and buying, piling up a large long position. That pile is its 

All morning, sellers keep hitting the bid. The market maker ends up 

Then bad news drops and the stock falls to 

The market maker is now sitting on roughly 

 on its inventory. A ₹0.20 spread cannot rescue a ₹5 move. 

. When it has bought too much and is uncomfortably long, it nudges 

 — say to bid ₹499.70 / ask ₹499.90. That makes it less attractive for others to keep selling to it, and more attractive for buyers to lift shares off it. The skew quietly pushes the market to take the unwanted inventory back.

A market maker doesn't want to bet on direction. When it accidentally builds up a position, it shifts its prices to nudge the crowd into taking that position off its hands.

Adverse selection: trading against people who know more

This is the subtler, scarier risk. The trader hitting your quote might know something you don't.

Example 3 — picked off by informed flow

A well-informed trader knows weak results are about to be announced. He aggressively dumps shares on the market maker at the bid of 

The market maker “won” the ₹0.20 spread on that trade — and then lost 

 on the position it was left holding. The people most eager to trade against a stale quote are often the best-informed.

widen the spread when uncertainty is high

. Around results, big news, RBI policy, the Union Budget, or options expiry, market makers pull their quotes apart — bid ₹499 / ask ₹501 instead of ₹499.90 / ₹500.10. A wider spread is both a cushion against being picked off and fair compensation for taking on more risk.

 spreads blow out and slippage spikes during volatile moments — the people quoting prices are protecting themselves.

Market makers fear traders who know more than they do. When that risk is high, they widen their quotes — which is why spreads get ugly in fast, news-driven markets.

The edge on any single trade is tiny and the risks are real, so market making survives on four pillars working together:

The profit per trade is tiny. The business only works through huge volume, fast quote updates, careful hedging, and — sometimes — incentives paid by the exchange.

Market making vs. liquidity provision — same thing?

Closely related, but not identical, and the difference is worth getting right.

 that rests in the order book and waits to be hit is providing liquidity. When you put a limit buy a few paise below the market and let it sit, you are — for that moment — a small liquidity provider. The opposite is 

 liquidity: firing a market order that grabs a quote already sitting there.

 is the specific, professional version: doing this 

continuously, on both sides, as a business

Many electronic venues even formalise this with a 

 model: the trader who posts a resting order (the “maker”) gets a small rebate, while the one who hits it (the “taker”) pays a fee — a direct reward for filling up the book. (India's fee structure works differently, but the maker/taker idea is the same underlying logic of paying for liquidity.)

Every market maker provides liquidity, but not everyone who provides liquidity is a market maker. Posting one resting limit order makes you a liquidity provider for a moment. Doing it all day, both sides, as your job, makes you a market maker.

India's story has a nice arc. Once upon a time, the BSE trading floor had 

 — dealers who stood in the ring and shouted two-way quotes. When exchanges automated in the mid-1990s, the anonymous electronic order book took over much of that role, and classic floor market making faded away. Today the market is mostly 

: prices come from the limit order book, not from a designated dealer you must go through.

But designated market makers did not disappear. They are still required exactly where natural liquidity is thin:

1. SME IPOs — market making is mandatory

For companies listing on the SME platforms (BSE SME and NSE Emerge), SEBI's ICDR rules require a registered market maker to be appointed. That market maker must provide 

two-way quotes for most of the trading day

, maintain a minimum quote depth, and keep doing so for 

 after listing. The idea is to make sure even a tiny, freshly listed company has someone you can always trade against. There can be only a small number of market makers per scrip.

2. ETFs — market makers keep the price near NAV

Because an ETF can only be bought and sold on the exchange, AMCs appoint market makers to keep it trading close to its fair value (the NAV). Their special power: they can 

create and redeem ETF units directly with the AMC

. If the ETF drifts to a premium above NAV, a market maker creates fresh units, sells them on the exchange, and pulls the price back down toward fair value — and the reverse for a discount. SEBI's 2022 “Development of Passive Funds” framework even allowed net settlement to make this less capital-intensive and bring in more players.

3. SEBI's Liquidity Enhancement Scheme (LES)

 to firms for quoting in chosen contracts — usually newly launched or illiquid ones. BSE famously used an LES to build its index options volumes almost from scratch. More recently, the revived Metropolitan Stock Exchange (MSE) leaned on an LES to bootstrap trading in liquid names, paying market makers to keep tight quotes while it tries to win traders away from the NSE–BSE duopoly.

In genuinely liquid products — NIFTY and BANKNIFTY options, index futures — most of the continuous quoting you trade against comes from fast proprietary algo firms. They are not always “designated” market makers, but functionally they supply much of the liquidity. The well-known Indian names include the likes of Graviton, Quadeye and AlphaGrep, alongside global players. When your option order fills instantly, this is usually who took the other side.

India runs mostly on an electronic order book, but designated market makers are still required where liquidity is naturally thin — SME stocks and ETFs — while fast algo firms quietly provide most of the quoting in liquid derivatives.

Understanding how market makers think makes you a cheaper trader: lean on limit orders, respect the spread, and avoid trading thin instruments during volatile windows.
