Three currencies. Three exchange rates. And once in a while, those three rates quietly 

When they do, you can start with some money, pass it through all three currencies in a loop, come back to where you started — and end up with 

 than you began with. No prediction. No view on the market. Just a loop that doesn't add up the way it should.

That's triangular arbitrage. Let's build it from scratch, slowly.

Imagine you're standing at three money-changer counters, and you can swap money instantly between them.

If the world is fair, walking your money all the way around this loop should leave you 

 where you started — same dollars, nothing gained, nothing lost. The three rates should perfectly cancel out.

But markets aren't always perfectly fair for a split second. Sometimes the three rates are slightly out of line. And when that happens, the loop hands you a small profit just for completing it.

 if three exchange rates don't line up, a full loop through them gives you back more (or less) than you put in. That mismatch is the opportunity.

2. A worked example you can follow on paper

Let's use real-looking numbers. Suppose right now:

You started with $1,000,000 and ended with 

, created out of nothing but a mismatch — in the few seconds it took to do three swaps. You never guessed which way any currency would move.

 convert dollar → euro → pound → dollar, and if the rates are out of line, you come back with extra money for free.

3. The one rule that tells you if a loop is profitable

You don't need to walk the whole loop to check. Just 

That's the whole test. One multiplication tells you whether free money is sitting on the table, and which direction to grab it from.

 multiply the three rates. Above 1, go this way. Below 1, go the other way. Exactly 1, there's nothing to do.

Because this is the most competitive trade on earth, and three things stand in your way.

 When you actually swap currencies, you never get that clean "mid" rate. You buy at a slightly worse price and sell at a slightly worse price — the gap between the two is the 

, and it's the money-changer's cut. A real triangular opportunity has to be 

 before you make a single rupee. Most of the time, it isn't. The spread quietly eats the gap.

. The moment one appears, automated systems at banks and trading firms pounce and the rates snap back into line. By the time a human notices, it's gone. This is a machine's game, measured in microseconds.

 Every swap has fees. Three swaps, three sets of fees. On a tiny mismatch, costs alone can turn a "profit" into a loss.

 the gap is real but tiny, it vanishes in milliseconds, and spreads plus fees usually swallow it. Only the fastest automated players capture it.

 This is the classic home of triangular arbitrage. It's so heavily automated that the major currency rates stay almost perfectly consistent — 

 arbitrageurs instantly punish any mismatch. In a real sense, the trade is what 

Crypto — the version retail can actually see.

 This is the one worth your attention. On a single crypto exchange you'll often find loops like:

Crypto markets are younger, more fragmented, and less efficient than forex, so these little mismatches appear more often and last a touch longer. They're still fiercely contested by bots, and exchange fees are brutal on a thin edge — but this is the one arena where a sharp coder can at least 

 triangular arbitrage on live data without being a bank.

 On the NSE you have USDINR, EURINR, and GBPINR contracts, which form their own triangle. In practice the liquidity and the spreads make a pure retail triangular play very hard here — but the 

 are real, and understanding them is genuinely useful for anyone watching these markets.

 forex is locked down by machines, Indian currency futures are tough on spreads, and crypto is the one place a retail quant can actually watch the idea play out live.

The beauty of this strategy is how little code it takes. Give it three rates, and it tells you whether the loop pays — and which way to run it.

A real scanner adds the bits that decide whether it's 

 prices instead of one clean rate, subtracts all three 

, and only flags a loop when the leftover edge is still positive. That's the difference between a textbook example and a trade — and it's almost always those extra terms that kill the opportunity.

7. Why it matters even if you never trade it

 exchange rates around the world stay consistent with each other. You're seeing the cleanup crew that keeps prices honest. Understanding the trade means understanding why currency markets behave the way they do — which is valuable whether or not you ever place the order.
