Walk into one shop and a kilo of tomatoes costs ₹40. Walk into the shop next door and the exact same tomatoes cost ₹44. If you could buy from the first and instantly sell to the second, you'd pocket ₹4 a kilo — no haggling, no waiting, no view on where tomato prices are headed.

. The "tomatoes" are a stock or a coin, the "shops" are two different exchanges, and the gap between their prices is your profit — 

It sounds like the easiest money in the world. It usually isn't, and the reasons why are the most interesting part. Let's build it up slowly.

The same asset often trades in more than one place at the same time:

In a perfect world, the price would be identical everywhere. In the real world, each exchange has its own buyers and sellers, so prices drift slightly apart. When they do, the trade is obvious:

Buy on the exchange where it's cheap. Sell on the exchange where it's dear. Keep the difference.

You're not betting on the asset going up or down. You're betting that two prices for the 

 will come back together — which they almost always do.

 one asset, two venues, two prices. Buy the cheap one, sell the dear one, pocket the gap.

2. The one thing that makes this trade different

Every arbitrage has a catch. With cross-exchange arbitrage, the catch is baked into the name: you're dealing with 

, and your money and your asset don't automatically live in both.

To sell Bitcoin on Exchange B, you need Bitcoin 

. To buy it on Exchange A, you need cash 

. So before you can do anything, you have to solve a logistics problem that the other arbitrages don't have.

There are two ways people solve it — and the difference between them is the difference between a hobby and a business.

Way 1: The "transfer" method (the slow, risky way)

 — minutes to hours, depending on blockchain confirmations or bank settlement. And in that time, the gap you were chasing can shrink, vanish, or flip against you. You locked in the 

 price, so you're exposed while your money is in transit. Add withdrawal fees on top, and this method usually disappoints.

 buy here, ship it there, sell it — but while it's "in the post," the price can move and erase your profit.

Way 2: The "inventory" method (how the pros do it)

The professionals never wait for a transfer. Instead, they 

 — cash on A, Bitcoin on B. Now, the instant a gap appears:

Both legs happen at once, so there's no transfer risk and no exposure to the price moving. They captured the gap cleanly. Their balances are now lopsided (more coin on A, more cash on B), so every so often they do 

 transfer to rebalance — but that's housekeeping, done at their leisure, not part of the live trade.

 keep cash on one exchange and the coin on the other, so you can buy and sell at the 

 and never wait on a transfer. Rebalance later.

This is the single most important idea in the whole strategy. The pros aren't faster at transferring — they've arranged things so they never need to transfer 

4. Why do the gaps exist in the first place?

Here's the rule that explains everything: 

the harder it is to move money between two venues, the bigger and longer-lasting the price gap.

If money flows freely between two exchanges, any gap gets arbitraged away in seconds. But put up a wall — slow transfers, withdrawal limits, KYC delays, or a country's capital controls — and arbitrageurs can't easily push the prices back together. The gap then survives, sometimes for days.

 on South Korean exchanges than everywhere else. Why? Because South Korea's strict rules on moving money in and out of the country made it genuinely hard to arbitrage the gap away. The wall created the premium.

India has seen its own version. When moving rupees in and out of crypto was difficult, Indian exchanges sometimes showed a persistent premium or discount versus global prices — the same mechanism, the same cause.

 gaps appear and stick around exactly where it's hard to move money between the two venues. No wall, no gap.

5. The cleanest Indian example: NSE vs BSE

You don't need crypto to see this. Most large Indian stocks — Reliance, HDFC Bank, TCS — are listed on 

 the NSE and the BSE at the same time. Their prices are almost always within a few paise of each other.

Why only a few paise? Because hundreds of automated systems are watching both screens every millisecond, instantly buying on whichever exchange is cheaper and selling on the dearer one. That army of bots is 

 the two prices stay glued together. The arbitrage is real — it's just already being done, thousands of times a second, by players with co-located servers and rock-bottom fees.

For a retail trader, the gap on a liquid stock is almost always 

 — brokerage, exchange fees, STT, stamp duty. By the time you've paid all that, the few-paise gap is long gone. So NSE-BSE arbitrage is a real strategy, but it belongs to high-frequency firms, not to someone clicking buttons.

 the same stock on NSE and BSE barely differs, 

 bots already arbitrage it. For retail, costs eat the tiny gap before you can blink.

Let's put numbers on the inventory method. Say you keep cash on Exchange A and Bitcoin on Exchange B. A gap opens:

You buy 1 BTC on A and sell 1 BTC on B, at the same moment. Gross gain: 

Looks great. But hold on — we haven't crossed the Indian tax line yet, and that's where this particular dream meets reality (next section). A 0.8% gap is also on the large side; most cross-exchange gaps on liquid coins are far thinner, and once fees take their 0.2% bite, a lot of "opportunities" are already underwater before tax.

7. The catches (this is where most of the money leaks out)

Exchange counterparty risk — the big one.

 of them. If an exchange freezes withdrawals, gets hacked, or simply collapses, that money can be gone. This isn't theoretical — traders have been wiped out when exchanges like Mt. Gox and FTX failed while holding customer funds. In cross-exchange arbitrage you're doubly exposed, because you're holding balances on two venues at all times. The "risk-free" trade has a very real way of losing 100%.

 This is the same wall that kills crypto triangular arbitrage. In India, a crypto trade triggers a 

 (not the profit), gains are taxed at a flat 

 with no offsetting of losses, and there's an 

 as well. Selling 1 BTC at ₹50,40,000 means roughly ₹50,400 deducted as TDS on that leg alone — which by itself is larger than the ₹40,000 gap you were chasing. On Indian exchanges, the tax structure turns most crypto cross-exchange arbitrage into a guaranteed loss.

 If you ever do need to move funds (to rebalance, or because you used the transfer method), blockchain or banking delays expose you to price moves, and withdrawal fees chip away at the edge.

 size. Try to trade big and you "walk the book" — your own order moves the price against you, and the gap evaporates.

 Two legs means two sets of trading fees, plus you cross the bid-ask spread on both. On a thin gap, this alone is often the whole edge.

 your cash sits on two exchanges that could fail, India's taxes can dwarf the gap, big size moves the price, and fees take a double bite. "Risk-free" it is not.

8. For the coders: a cross-exchange scanner

The logic is refreshingly simple: pull the price of the same asset from two venues, work out the gap, subtract 

 it costs to capture it, and only flag it if something's still left. The discipline is entirely in the "subtract everything" step.

 ₹40,000 gap is a healthy profit in a no-TDS world and a guaranteed 

 the moment India's 1% TDS lands on the sell leg. The gap was never the hard part — the costs are. A production version would pull live order books (so it sees the 

 tradeable price for your size, not the headline), track your balances on each venue, and account for counterparty limits before flagging anything.

 the code that finds the gap is easy. The code that subtracts every real-world cost is what tells you the truth — and the truth is often "don't."

9. Why it's worth understanding even if you never trade it

Cross-exchange arbitrage is the force that keeps a single asset honestly priced across the whole world. Every time two venues disagree, arbitrageurs trade them back together — which is why Bitcoin costs roughly the same on every major exchange, and why Reliance is the same price on NSE and BSE. When that 

 happen — a stubborn Kimchi premium, an India premium — it's a giant flashing sign that says "money can't move freely between these two places." Reading that sign tells you something real about capital controls, liquidity, and risk, whether or not you ever place the trade.

The same asset often trades at slightly different prices on two exchanges, and the trade is simply to buy on the cheap one and sell on the dear one. The pros do it by pre-funding both venues so they can buy and sell at the same instant without waiting on a transfer. Gaps appear and persist wherever it's hard to move money between venues — that's the whole story behind the Kimchi premium and India's crypto premium. But the strategy carries the scariest risk in all of arbitrage: your money sits on exchanges that can freeze or fail. And for Indian crypto traders, the 1% TDS on every trade usually turns the gap into a loss before you even start. The cleanest version to
